Mobile phones are becoming the most common device on the planet. Enterprises should have a rich presence on their customer’s mobile phones.
A good Smartphone application should have:
- Assisted Service – So customer can get live help when they need it. Without leaving the app.
- Rich Features – So the apps are fun, and provide a real service (like depositing a check by taking a picture of it).
- Location Based Services – So customers get offers that are relevant to who they are and where they are.
There are a couple challenges though.
- Features - Every feature has to be built from scratch every time. There is no library of packaged features for apps (like an accident toolkit for insurance apps, or paperless boarding passes for airline apps)
- Development – Enterprises have to develop the apps for each of main Smartphone operating systems. It’s a hassle to maintain code that does the same thing for multiple phone platforms.
- Maintenance – Enterprises have to constantly test their apps with each new Smartphone that comes out. This can be very time consuming.
